The police

Sir, — Surely the Government and the Minister of Police realise that law and order is now the most urgent and important issue deserving consideration. The Police have a very onerous task endeavouring to protect the public and property, and should be given every assistance both with regard to personnel numbers and remuneration. It is generally recognised that “the policeman’s lot is not a happy one.” I consider that in these times the policeman on the beat should be given “danger money” (unionists are not averse to claiming this) and that in general the force should be more than well treated. I agree with the Napier Superintendent of Police (“The Press,” January 11) that people should write to their Parliamentarian and the media on this matter. If our good way of life is to be preserved crime against person and property must be controlled and only the police can do this. — Yours, etc.,

MAURICE SIMES. January 12, 1986.
