Fisherman hooks record catch

PA Whangarei A Whangaroa commercial fisherman, Wink Bannister, has claimed two New Zealand records after landing a 160.5 kg blue shark on Saturday. Taken on 24kg tackle, the catch is believed to be the heaviest for the line weight and the heaviest all-tackle blue shark performance to date. Bannister was fishing alone on his seven-metre

longliner Vixen. The big shark was hooked, played and boated in a solo performance.

The game fishing enthusiast’s performance heads off the New Zealand record for a 24kg line of 151.5 kg set by G. Pyatt at Tutukaka in March, 1983, and the all tackle New Zealand record for a blue shark of 156 kg set by Roy Sheard, of Whangaroa, in February, 1983.
