Rings taken in handbag theft
A North New Brighton woman had a handbag containing valuable items stolen from her car while her daughter was cleaning horse droppings from a drive at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Monday. Twelve “irreplaceable” rings of sentimental value, cheque books and bank books, a gold compact case, and $llO cash were among the items in the handbag. The rings are owned by Mrs Raewyn Marchant, of Royalist Avenue, and are not insured. She has appealed to the thief for their return, saying that she is not concerned about the cash. “They can do what they like with the cash, but the rings are irreplaceable. I’m still extremely upset,” she said. The handbag was taken in
the “two to three minutes” it took Mrs Marchant’s daughter to clean some droppings left by her horsein a drive going into Queen Elizabeth II Park. Her daughter was no more than 10m from the unlocked car, which was parked behind the stadium off the Frosts Road entrance.
The handbag, which is black imitation leather with two handles, was left under a seat.
As soon as the daughter discovered the theft, she went to a nearby recreation ground to get Mrs Marchant and then on to the New Brighton police station. Inquiries centre round a dark green Mk I Cortina driven by a fair-haired youth which left the area at the time of the theft.
