Rescue attempt fails
PA Napier A pensioner, aged 85, tried in vain to rescue his neighbour, an elderly widow, from her burning flat in Napier early yesterday. The woman was Mrs Mary Drury Hill, aged 71, of Bedford Road, Napier. She was found dead in the charred lounge of her unit. Her neighbour, Mr Ted Pattison, saw smoke pour-
ing from the flat about 6.45 a.m. and called the fire brigade. He tried to get into the flat with a key, but a deadlock on the back door prevented him from getting inside. Firemen had to smash in the front door to gain entry. The fire commander, Mr Peter Blackmore, said Mrs Hill was found on the floor of the lounge. She must have been overcome by smoke from the fire which
started on a couch. Mr Pattison said Mrs Hill had not been well and he had a key to her flat so he and a friend could keep an eye on her.
