Truck driver dies in pit
A man died yesterday after the truck he was driving rolled over into a waterfilled shingle pit in the Waimakariri riverbed, near Darfield. He was Raymond Mayo, aged 41. Mr Mayo had only recently moved to Canterbury. Police divers sent to the scene found the man’s body in the pit about 7.25 p.m. The truck, which was towing a front-end loader, had been recovered about two hours earlier. The vehicle had rolled into a shingle pit near Carters Road. It was not known last evening whether the pit was privately owned or a commercial one.
The police were told about 3 p.m. when another truck driver saw the overturned vehicle. Searchers were taken to the area in four-wheel-drive vehicles.
