Policeman attacked

A policeman was beaten unconscious as two prisoners tried to escape from the District Court in Christchurch yesterday afternoon.

Constable Robert Woulds, who had been on court escort duty, was taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital. His condition was not available last evening. The attack happened at 1.15 p.rd. as the three police-

men on escort duty were transferring prisoners in custody from the court holding cell.

Two prisoners were later arrested, and are expected to appear in the District ' Court today, charged with escaping and assaulting a policeman.

Sergeant. W. P. Creasey said the men attempted to escape as they were being transferred to the van. They

were being put in a police van which was backed against the external cell door, in an enclosed yard at the court.

Constable Woulds was punched and kicked on the head and body. Two other prisoners in the cells at the time went to the aid of the police and helped to prevent further injuty.,to. Constable -Woulds, a constable said. - ‘
