Live sheep exports

Sir,—The export of live sheep is a complete betrayal of those animals. There is little point in having humane killing in New Zealand slaughter houses conforming to the most enlightened world standards, while at the same time allowing live sheep to be exported to alien climates and customs to be slaughtered in the most primitive fashion. Only a cynical Government would betray its promises on this issue. It is time Labour started taking stock of past traditions of principles and ethics in its handling of the affairs of both humans and animals, instead of abandoning them for expediency. Righteousness exalts a nation. There is nothing righteous in the degrading practice of exporting live sheep.—Yours, etc., J. SHARP. December 18, 1985.
