Christmas

Sir,—Many of us will agree with Ted Mulcock that Christmas, which commemorates but does not mark the birthday of Christ, gains nothing from the pagan customs which have surrounded it; but it is one of the facts of life that no matter how elevated a religion may be, the common people will ever demand its “panes et circenses,” and folk religion gets quite astray from the ideals of its founder. I am, however, at a loss to understand Mr Mulcock’s claim that Christ wished the breaking of the bread to be repeated only every Passover. Could he please give us some concrete evidence to

back his airy-fairy theory which, in 54 years of priesthood, has never before crossed my path?—Yours, etc KENNETH SCHOLLAR. December 18, 1985.
