Mr Lange and farmers

Sir,—ln “The Press” of December 10, Mr Lange said: “There will undoubtedly be some farmers praying for a drought or a flood, because that is when they get specific instances of relief.” By making this comment, Mr Lange displays once again his total ignorance and lack of understanding towards the farming industry. Farmers do not financially or in any other way benefit from disasters over which the farmer has no control. Can Mr Lange explain how a farmer can pray for his farm to turn into a dust bowl or to see his farm awash with two or three feet of water? How can a farmer enjoy cleaning up the aftermath of these disasters, with stock, pasture, buildings, etc., destroyed? One wonders how a Prime Minister, no matter what party he represents, can justify making this statement—Yours, etc., G. M. WADDELL. Valetta, December 16, 1985.
