Petrol shortage
Sir,—l hope that someone in authority will explain why it is impossible to buy 91 octane petrol in Christchurch at present and has been for the last two weeks. I venture to say that if it was 93 octane that was unobtainable there would have been an immediate outcry, but because it is 91 that we cannot get nothing is said. As far as I am aware the A.A.C., the press and the Minister of Energy have all been silent. I have been told that it will probably be after Christmas before 91 octane is available again and this is just not good enough for the vast number of motorists who rely on this grade for the efficient running of their cars.—Yours, etc., W. R. HOBBS. December 10, 1985.
[Mr J. E. Strachan, general manager of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) replies: “The present limited availability of 91 octane can be attributed to the slow start-up of the Marsden Point oil refinery after a 19-week reconstruction. The first tanker of Marsden Point refined petrol in six months was scheduled to leave the refinery on December 8 but is not now expected to leave until late in the month. It may be necessary for the correspondent to shop around for supplies, but contact made on Monday of. this week with a number of service stations in and around metropolitan Christchurch has shown 91 octane petrol to be available in most areas. No other motorist has contacted the association to express any concern about availability of 91 octane petrol.”]/
