Burden of proof
Sir, — N. T. Higginson (December 14) talks about the integrity of policemen, something which we can no longer hold as a self-evident truth. The law is there to protect us, not only from burglars but also to keep absolute power unobtainable. The foundation stone of our justice system is, then, innocent until proven guilty and I believe there should be no exceptions to this. Mr Higginson implies that there are several, and uses opium poppies as his example, the burden being on the grower to prove their purpose was not for extracting the drug. The ever-widening gap between police and the society they are supposed to serve is caused largely by the dangerous convictions shared by Mr Higginson and the others who wear the uniform. If the police are to become as effective as they used to be, I suggest they cease the provocative, challenging attitude they have assumed in the last decade. — Yours, etc., B. BASTION.
