Bus dispute

Sir,—l think P. J. Nisbet considers that Christchurch Transport Board elected members “couldn’t care less” because they actually did care and stood up for the people who elected them. The State-linked general adjustment will increase the average bus operator’s wage by about $7O a week and the politicians indicate that this is all the country can afford at present. We are told that Auckland has 600 ordinary buses plus 20 articulated buses and all drivers and cleaners get $l3 a week regardless of whether they drive the articulated buses or not (apparently only 60 people actually drive them). Is P. J. Nisbet suggesting that the Christchurch Transport Board should pretend it has six articulated buses in its fleet of 182 buses, and then pay th| $l3 a

week extra to all regardless? The fare increase is too complex for a short letter but details would be available to P. J. Nisbet.—Yours, etc PATRICK NEARY. December 17, 1985.
