Baseball star dies
NZPA-AP Houston Roger Maris, who held the major league baseball record for the most home runs in a single season, has died after a two-year bout with cancer. He was 51. Maris, who was admitted to the M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute on
November 20, was being treated for lymphoma, a cancer which invades the body’s lymph system. In 1961, Maris beat by one the 60-home-run record set by Babe Ruth in 1927. He won the American league’s Most Valuable Player awards in 1960 and 1961.
