Quick response to call praised
The Fire Service was praised yesterday for its quick response to a call at Aranui High School earlier in the morning. The school’s principal, Mr J. A. Grigor, said that the quick turnout by the Fire Service had helped to limit damage by the fire, which broke out in a prefabricated classroom. The school’s executive officer also played a hose on the blaze until firemen arrived at 8.45 a.m. Mr Grigor said that the fire damaged panelling’in
the classroom and destroyed a quantity of books and journals. The Fire Service was called after a duty teacher saw smoke coming from the classroom. The blaze is believed to have started in a pile of foam mattresses which had been placed too near a panel heater. The heater switches on automatically each morning. The damaged room will be repaired during the school holidays.
