Warrior fate sealed
PA Auckland The fate of the bombed Rainbow Warrior was sealed yesterday at a meeting aboard the crippled vessel.
Representatives of Greenpeace, the Underwater Association, and the people of Matauri Bay confirmed that the protest vessel’s final resting place would be off the Northland beach, midway between the Bay of Islands and Whangaroa Harbour. A spokesman for the Matauri Bay community, Mr Dover Samuels, the president of the Underwater Association, Mr Allan Fowler, and Mr Steve Sawyer, a member of Greenpeace International, emerged from the half-hour meeting happy with the mutual decision.
Further meetings will be held between the groups to arrange for the ship to be towed to its resting place. Mr Sawyer said it was unlikely the job would be completed before Christmas.
“The boat will be towed up there by tug,” he said.
