McEnroe rallies to beat Leconte
NZPA-Reuter - Melbourne
John McEnroe, trailing- by two sets to one, and 5-1 down in the fourth-set tiebreaker, rallied to beat the dashing Frenchman, Henri Leconte, 57, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1, in the fourth round of the Australian Open tennis championships yesterday. Playing on an outside court, the second-seeded American needed 3hr 15min to overcome Leconte’s challenge, and take his place in the quarter-finals.
Only two other players made it through to the last eight after heavy rain delayed the start of the day’s play. Johan Kriek, the sixth seed, swept aside Jay Lapidus, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, in an all-American contest. Slobodan Zivojinovic, the big-serving Yugoslav, upset the seeded American, Tim Mayotte 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Kriek will now meet either the defending champion, Mats Wilander, of Sweden, the third seed, or the American, Tim Wilkison.
