Hours extended for restaurant
Drinking and dancing will be permitted at the Civic Regency restaurant until 2 a.m.
The Licensing Control Commission approved an application by Mr Nam Yee to extend the hours of dining and entertainment on the ground and mezzanine floors of the building from Monday to Sunday. The previous licence extended to 12.30 a.m.
Receptions and functions will now be allowed until 1 a.m. on the first floor. Mr Yee said he wanted to allow a variety of live acts to perform until the early hours to meet the demand of tourists and other sections of the community. Remodelling of the restaurant to provide a stage, lighting and changing rooms had provided good facilities for this and. there had been
requests from diners for after-dinner entertainment. Mr P. J. Goodfellow, representing three existing nightclubs in Christchurch, objected to the application. He said there was already sufficient cabaret entertainment to satisfy the public. Mr J. G. Fogarty, representing the Canterbury branch of the Hotel Association of New Zealand, objected on the same ground and said that the patrons would visit the Civic Regency to drink'rather than for food and entertainment.
However, the commission, chaired by Judge Gatley, said the Civic Regency would provide a different type of late night entertainment from that already available and would not conform to the usual nightclub pattern.
