P.O. project

Wellington reporter Tenders will be called late next year for the redevelopment of Christchurch’s Chief Post Office. The Government has approved the preparation of working drawings and specifications for the work, which will involve retaining the existing facade of the present post office. The member of Parliament for Christchurch Central, Mr Geoffrey Palmer, said that Ministry of Works

and Development architects would design the new complex, and construction should start early in 1987. The complex will include a new seven-storey building on the Hereford Street frontage of the site. The facade of the present building has a Historic Places Trust classification. Its interior will be significantly improved, and integrated with the new building by an atrium and a series of walkways.
