Commuters stranded
Some Christchurch commuters were left stranded yesterday afternoon when eight scheduled bus services were cancelled because of a ban on voluntary overtime by Christchurch Transport Board drivers. Another seven scheduled buses were cancelled on Monday afternoon, also leaving people stranded for up to about 15 minutes. No Transport Board buses will run between 6 a.m. tomorrow and 6 a.m. on Friday because of a 24-hour strike by drivers, who are taking part in a campaign by the Tramway Workers’ Union to get members a $32 a week industry allowance.
Next week could see a two-day strike. However, there will be special buses going to the Canterbury A. and P. Show at the Addington Showgrounds today, leaving on demand from 9 a.m. from the bus stop outside Warner’s Hotel in Cathedral Square. The board’s deputy general manager, Mr Tony Francis, said that the rosters for Show buses had been worked out some time ago, and so did not require drivers working voluntary overtime.
On Friday the board will run a shuttle service to the Show from Riccarton Mall.
