Mining in State forest

Sir, — The Blackadders claim to be victims of political lobbying, but perhaps they should now explain publicly how it was that they obtained their mining consent in the first place. After all, the West Bank forests are zoned off-limits to tree felling, according to the North Westland Forest Management Plan, based on a 1981 Cabinet decision to impose a moratorium on the area. The Blackadders have made a fortune in gold from public land, paying no royalties, and believe they are entitled to do the same on the West Bank. The Government has rightly acted to uphold the moratorium there. — Yours etc., Gwenny Davis, President, Native Forests Action Council. July 19, 1985.
