Development work at Lyttelton
Sir, — The proposed reclamation of Lyttelton’s inner harbour promises a repetition of monumental blunders. Lyttelton citizens are already burdened with the tank farm with its potential danger, dramatically demonstrated by the recent explosion. L.P.G. and petrol tankers are potential bombs in our inner harbour. The whole tank farm should have been a delightful housing area where people could have enjoyed the present sports ground and the yachting marina in perfect safety. The logical
mation of the harbour is east to Gollans Bay. Perhaps board members have never heard of Cyrus Williams, an intelligent engineer with a brilliant plan for the port. To proceed with the proposed plan for the inner harbour is effective vandalism, even if well-intentioned. — Yours, etc., STAN HEMSLEY. July 23, 1985.
