Sumner II beaten in squash

Vistalite Sumner 11, already the winner of the Blank Trophy, suffered its first loss of the new competition round thanks to a spirited performance by Christchurch in men's open grade inter-club squash on Tuesday. At the top of the order for Christchurch Elliott Jones played well to beat Steven Wren. 3-1. and in the No. 3 position Adrian Casey was in top form in reversing an earlier defeat at the hands of Sumner’s Paul Monk who had enjoyed a run of seven straight wins. The Wilson Shield leader is now Sumner I which prevailed over Linwood with expected wins in the top two positions and is now four points clear of its fellow club side. For Marist, the veteran Barrv Gardiner could not resist a gleeful whoop when he completed a 3-1 win over lan Charlton (Burnside). It was his first success in 10 inter-club matches this season. Lancaster Park, the promoted team for the Wilson Shield round, showed that it cannot be discounted by any side with its comprehensive win over High School Old Bovs. Robbie Burnett. Brett Hibbert and Peter Bremmers all put in solid performances for Park and after three weeks in the open grade competition the unspectacular but very effective Bremmers has yet to lose a match. In the women’s competition Suburbs automatically won a place in the grand final, if one is required, for the Kathy Hargreaves Trophy after clearly winning the second competition round. A grand final will be necessary if any team other than Suburbs wins the third round and during the greater part of that round Suburbs will be without its top player. Kathy Hargreaves, who will soon leave for Ireland as managercoach of the New Zealand junior women's world championship team. &
