Road widening
Sir,—lf the proposals to widen Barbadoes, Madras and Kilmore Streets go ahead, the shopping centre on the corners of Barbadoes and Kilmore Streets will be demolished. At the special meeting on Monday evening concerning the proposed road widening, one council officer mentioned that these shops would be replaced. As these shops are vital to a community where many elderly people live, I am concerned that some provision be made. If the shops are to be replaced, could details on the proposed site be published? — Yours, etc ’’ NICKY COBB. June 27, 1985. [Mr J. H. Gray, the Christchurch City General Manager and Town Clerk, replies: “The proposed widening which may affect the shops on the corner of Barbadoes and Kilmore Streets is still subject to decisions by the Planning Tribunal. The tribunal will convene on July 15 to hear applications for adjournments from solicitors for the objectors. If granted the hearing may be deferred till next year. If the widening is confirmed by the tribunal, the work, however, is unlikely to proceed for several years, so the shops would be demolished in the near future. Before the proposals are implemented it is likely that the council will consider the zoning of additional commercial land on the north-east corner of this intersection. If this occurs, sites will become available for shops to be built in this zone.”]
