Servicemen die in fire
PA Palmerston North Two servicemen died in a fire which destroyed a house in Bulls early yesterday. They were: Corporal Michael Douglas Keyte, aged 25, of Whangarei; and Corporal Lawrence Maxwell Corlett, aged 27, of Napier. Another serviceman, Sergeant Neil Johnson, aged 26, saved himself by jumping through a window. All three were Royal New Zealand
Air Force personnel stationed at the nearby Ohakea air base. Sergeant Johnson is in Palmerston North Hospital with burns, cuts, and abrasions. Neighbours spotted smoke coming from the small house about 4 am. The house was well alight when the Bulls Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived. The police said that it appeared the fire had started in the lounge chimney.
