Bolivian generals dispute treaty

Bolivia’s Foreign Minister, Edgar Camacho Omiste, resigned on Saturday under pressure from the military after Bolivia recognised China and broke relations with Taiwan.

The resignation was one day before a Presidential election. Polls indicate that Hugo Banzer Suarez, a retired general and former military strongman, is running well ahead of the candidate of the governing Centre-Left coalition. The Interior Minister, Mr Gustavo Sanchez, announced the resignation but declined to comment on the reasons. He was named as Acting

Foreign Minister. Sources in the Presidential Palace said the armed forces had forced the resignation.

On Friday the military command bestowed three honours on the Taiwanese Ambassador, Eduardo TsuYu, and issued a statement condemning the Government’s decision to break relations and expell the Taiwanese delegation within 72 hours.

The Government then withdrew the deadline and did not set another date for the Ambassador to leave.

A Foreign Ministry communique issued on Thursday

had announced that Bolivia recognised the People’s Republic of China as China’s only legal Government and considered Taiwan, held by the Nationalist Chinese, as part of China.
