Nominee for top U.S. post

NZPA-Reuter Washington President Reagan will nominate Admiral William Crowe, commander of United States forces in the Pacific, to become chairman of the military Joint Chiefs of Staff. The ‘“New York Times” and “Washington Post” said Mr Reagan was expected to announce shortly Admiral Crowe’s nomination to succeed General John Vessey. The “Post” said General Vessey had told friends for some time that he wanted to retire before his fouryear term expired next June. The Joint Chiefs of Staff is composed of the top commanders of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. It makes decisions on strictly military issues but can only submit recommendations to the President on United States military policy.
