Book on Maori soldiers
PA Hamilton The retiring Director of Civil Defence, Mr Wira Gardiner, will to write a book about Maori soldiers, especially those of the 28th (Maori) Battalion of World War 11. He wants former Maori soldiers to get in touch with him if they can help. “I have accepted a labour of love to produce a book on the Maori soldier, with particular reference to the Maori Battalion,” Mr Gardiner said. “You will appreciate that our old soldiers are dwindling in numbers. “It is important that we record for future generations the personal side of the war they fought, and in which many of their friends and relatives died.” He wants to get in touch with former soldiers with a view to collecting information from diaries and letters. He would also like to make contact with those who may assist with oral recollections. Mr Gardiner lives at 26A Fitzroy Street, Wadestown, Wellington.
