Ten N.Z. horses in Fourex field
NZPA Sydney The / Doomben track in Brisbane will have something for everyone, from the mudlarks to the hard track specialists, when the capacity field — half of them New Zealanders — takes on the rich Fourex Cup today. The $205,000 race, over 2200 m, is the glamour middle-distance feature of the Brisbane Winter Carnival and has attracted 10 New Zealanders in the 20horse field. Heavy rain in Brisbane earlier this week closed all grass training tracks, but stopped on Wednesday. Since then the well-
drained track at Doomben has dried so well that it will be rated dead at worst today and could even be better than that. Providing there is no more rain, local pundits believe the track could offer something to suit all racing styles. Atrapar, one of the early favourites for the race, heads the weights with 55.5 kg, but the form horse that several New Zealanders believe has beaten the handicapper is the redoubtable Avitt, winner of a record three successive Prime Minister’s Cups, which comes into this cup at just 51kg.
