Gun for Fun looks top hurdles chance
Special correspondent Wellington The grand performer, Gun for Fun, should add to an illustrious career by winning the $15,000 Wellington Hurdles at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham this afternoon. The Balios 10-year-old has been a great toiler over the years for the Myers family from Hawera, having won some 13 races and $154,000 in stakes. Most of those wins were recorded on the flat and he was good enough to be placed in an Auckland Cup. While he has been jumping at home for many years, he is a relative newcomer
to the role on raceday, yet he has already compiled a great record. From just five starts over fences this winter he has won three times and recorded a third and a fourth as well But for a bad check, his third placing, recorded in the Great Northern Hurdle, could have been even better. Gun for Fun showed he had trained on well when he finished a very creditable eighth against the openclass stayers in the Parliamentary Handicap on Wednesday. The horse looks to be well placed in the handicap today with just 59.5 kg and ( barring accidents, he looks
the best of good things. He will be ridden by Kim Treweek, who is no stranger to the horse, having won on him at Rotorua on May 25. The toughest opposition is likely to come from the course specialist, Floodlight, which has won four races on the track. The Arragon 11-year-old showed pelnty of dash to win the Trentham Hurdles last Saturday and will be attempting to complete the same double he won two years ago. He is getting up in the weights, though, and it is difficult to see him conceding Gun for Fun 5.5 kg. Ellen’s Soldier and Curdu both went sound races behind Floodlight on the first day while the looser footing,
as a result of yesterday’s 4 rain, should see some improvement from Noble Edi- X tion. Rosenveld looks the 4 best of the others. 7 The day’s other jumping 4 feature is the Eric Riddi-jj ford Steeples, which al-« though it has drawn just 2 seven runners, looks very 5 even and should provide a good contest. 2 Kanamint is racing soundly and could prove the 2 toughest to beat, while 4 Headford’s run for second J behind Long Acre in the 4 Wellington Steeples last 2 week will earn him plenty « of support. 4 Treghan, Greek Boy and 4 Civil Rights are all capable J ’chasers though their recent form is only mediocre. ®
