Ace on Contract in Grand National
NZPA Melbourne Grant Ace will ride the New Zealander, Contract, in the $62,000 Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington today despite failing yesterday in two appeals to the Victoria Racing Club committee. Ace had been suspended by Werribee Racing Club stewards on two counts of careless riding on July 2. In dismissing Ace’s appeal the V.R.C. Committee varied the penalty to two fines of $5OO each. Ace will now be free to take the ride on Contract in the 5000 m race. Last week, when riding under a stay of proceedings pending appeal, Ace won
the Crisp Steeple on Contract and finished third in the Grand National Hurdles * on So Just. ? Contract is a stablemate 1 of another Grand National * Steeples contender, Region, 7 which will be ridden by r Stephen Jenkins. J Although he is on the 1 horse Jenkins rejected, Ace ~ said he would have chosen, Contract had he been given 1 the opportunity. J “Contract is the horse a coming into form at the * right time,” he said. » “He won well enough last» week to suggest he will get; the extra distance - I am, perfectly happy to be on him,” he said.
