Cycling on footpaths

Sir, — I strongly favour the use of off-road facilities, including footpaths, by all cyclists. I certainly feel safer on footpaths, especially at night, when having cycle lights is no guarantee of safety. I believe this, must be coupled with an absolute right of way for pedestrians on all shared facilities, and appropriate road-user education for both pedestrians and cyclists. I am sure that this approach would markedly assist safer and more efficient use of footpaths and roads. I share the concern of Mr John Strachan, of the Automobile Association (Canterbury), over the danger to pedestrians and cyclists, whether on footpaths or roads, when cars reverse out of driveways. Motorists could contribute significantly to cycle and pedestrian safety simply by reversing into driveways instead. — Yours, etc NEIL ANDERSON. July 10, 1985.
