Nurses’ conditions
Sir,—N. W. Milanovich lives in antiquity. Does she realise that Florence went walkabout some years ago, before inflation started to get into the pay packet of all New Zealanders, not just nurses. I too nursed in those dark, dismal, unenlightened years. Nurses now are a different breed, living in a modern environment with attitudes to our profession in line with those required by a modern society. I do not know where N. W. Milanovich gets the salary figures from, but I am unable to make any sense of them. A charge nurse’s maximum is at present $20,001 a year. A staff nurse's maximum is $18,053 and an enrolled nurse’s maximum $15,412. Their average is $17,822, or approximately $342 a week gross or approximately $230 net. The charge nurse rate is in reality the best most can expect with normal promotion and that only averages out at approximately $263 a week. — Yours, etc., R. P. FIELD. Prebbleton, July 9, 1985.
