Hawarden drain
Sir,—Ten years ago I wrote to you expressing concern about the open and stinking drain in the Hawarden township, and I thought it was now time to report progress. Today, Hurunui County Council staff arrived to begin work but, alas, it appears that the drain is not to be piped and covered. By the look of the work they are doing I feel they could be about to start the second stage of the Glenmark irrigation scheme, albeit in the wrong area. Perhaps through “The Press”, long-suffering residents and ratepayers could be enlightened as to what is going on and when our problem will be rectified. — Yours, etc MRS LYNLEY MORRISON. Hawarden, June 26, 1985.
[The acting chairman of the Hurunui County Council, Mr S. J. S. Barker, replies: “As a result of a county ratepayers’ poll last year, ’the council is unable to financially support land drainage schemes such as that proposed for Hawarden at the time of the poll. However, a revised scheme could be submitted to the North Canterbury Catchment Board for approval of subsidy, if this is the wish of Hawarden ratepayers. The recent work was necessary to alleviate a localised ponding problem in the drain.”]
