‘Gunships’ under attack
PA Levin A call for the banning of helicopter “gunships” for deer hunting was made at the opening session of the NZ Deerstalkers’ Association’s annual conference on Thursday evening. The patron of the Horowhenua branch of the association, Mr J. S. Blenkhorn, who is also Horowhenua County chairman, told delegates that the professional deer hunters — or cullers, as they became known — had considerably reduced the deer population in a decent and humane way. Mr Blenkhorn said he considered the use of helicopter “gunships” disgusting and unsporting. “It is thought that a large percentage of animals pursued by these gunships and not captured or killed subsequently die of stress or wounds,” he said. Calling for a ban on gunships, he said it was time more notice was taken by departmental experts of “practical people such as deerstalkers.”
