Study of nicotine gum

Wellington reporter The effectiveness of the new nicotine-based chewing gum, for people wanting to stop smoking, is being investigated by the Health Department. But the Minister of Health, Dr Bassett, said the department had not received an application to have the chewing gum included in the drug tariff. He was asked in Parliament by Mrs- Mary Batchelor (Lab., Avon) if, in view of the stated health threat posed by cigarettes, the new nicotine-based chewing gum to help those wanting to stop smoking would become obtainable on a doctor’s prescription. Dr Bassett said the new chewing gum was not yet available free on prescription.

It could be bought from retail pharmacies or supplied on prescription at the expense of the patient. The product had only just become available in New Zealand and there was yet only limited experience of its use.

The chewing gum was relatively expensive and a course of treatment using it would cost $34.96, Dr Bassett said.
