Criticism from employers
The Employers’ Federation was yesterday critical of the approval given by the Cabinet to the distribution unions amalgamation. The federation’s executive director, Mr Jim Rowe, said there must have been a lot of pressure on the Government for it to override the view of the Registrar of
Industrial Unions that the industries involved were not related. The Green Paper on industrial relations promised by the Minister of Labour, Mr Rodger, months ago seemed hardly worth while if unilateral decisions of this sort were to be made whenever unions pressed for
them, Mr Rowe said. “The timing of the takeover is interesting — just after the unions are given back compulsory powers over membership with no limit whatsoever on how much they can charge or for what purposes they use the money,” he said.
