Athlete fails in bid for visa
The Christchurch triathlete, Erin Baker, has been refused a visa to compete in the President’s triathlon in Dallas on June 9, but there is some hope that she may be allowed into the United States soon. Ms Baker meet a staff member of the United States Embassy in Christchurch yesterday, and was told her latest application for a visa to compete in the United . States had. been refused. However, the embassy official told , her that the embassy had asked the State Department to ask the Immigration Department to
waive the visa refusal. The only problem was that the official could give no indication of when the refusal might be waived. - Ms Baker has been refused several visas because of a conviction resulting from protests'iagainst the Springbok rugby? team during its tour of New Zea : land in 1981. ‘•.’ I Ms Baker hopes that she can obtain a visa in the next two months to enable her to compete in a qualifying event for the Hawaii Ironman triathlon in, October. The Ironman event is regarded as the world championship of triathlons. » ;
