Ban on some drinkers
PA Auckland Dominion Breweries has implemented a system of bans for drinkers who misbehave in its hotel bars. The company’s northern manager, Mr Kerry O’Neill, said yesterday that the bans varied from a month to a year. He said customers who misbehaved would be given a written statement by the hotel management advising them of the ban and its length. Mr O’Neill said that the system gave managers a way to curb trouble; w also
protected staff. At a Papatoetoe hotel this week a company manager disciplined a barmaid for not reporting trouble to the management. Instead, she went from behind the bar to deal personally with a troublesome woman. The rest of the staff considered the manager's subsequent final written warning unfair and went on strike for 24 hours. The hotel manager has since reduced the discipline to a verbal warning that the management should be allowed to handle trouble.
