Marginal land retirement

Sir, — Oliver Riddell’s report (“The Press,” May 9) sets out to give useful information on the retirement and surrender of high land. However, it contains a significant error, that 483,000 ha is surrendered or about to be. This figure is actually the total amount of land retired. Of this, only 261,000 ha is subject to surrender to the Crown and of this amount only 138,000 ha has been surrendered so far. To put these figures in perspective the total amount of Class VIII and Class VII land in the high country is approximately 1,300,000 ha. — Yours, etc., DAVID HENSON, Pastoral Lands Convener, Federated Mountain Clubs. May 13, 1985.
