Australia-N.Z. union
Sir,—Recently a former Australian Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Doug Anthony, made a call for the political union of New Zealand and Australia. He said pressure would mount for union in 10 to 15 years with full political amalgamation taking place in the early 2000 s. While I am all for free trade with Australia, together with strong military and friendship ties, I am totally opposed to this country becoming part of Australia. Surely we have enough trouble keeping our own Government under control. Imagine becoming another colony of Australia. We would lose virtually all our independence. Mr Anthony spoke as/.f political union
was a forgone conclusion. As a man close to the top power brokers in Australia, what does he know that we don’t?—Yours, etc., T. R. LOUDON. May 10, 1985.
