Homosexual law changes
Sir, — Concerned about the spread of Nazism 45 years ago, I, a university science graduand, voluntarily joined the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. When about to embark for Egypt I conducted an informal poll. Except for
myself, no-one gave as his enlistment motive the defence of freedom. Appalled by the erosion of freedom on my return, I subscribed to the National Party newspaper, “Freedom,” and attended lectures by Professor Algie expounding Professor Hayek’s book, “The Road to Serfdom,” on the danger within our society of the evil I had fought overseas. Nicolas Berdyaev’s book, “Slavery and Freedom” became my bible. Ignorance is the essence of evil. Anti-homosexual law reform agitators obviously know nothing of the philosophical basis of freedom, democracy or Christianity. Societies that fail to heed the lessons of history are doomed to suffer all over again. Persons duped into signing the petition should rectify their error by writing to Ms Fran Wilde. — Yours, etc., PAUL MALING. May 11, 1985. Sir,—This is a message to those of the silent majority who oppose the Homosexual Law Reform Bill. Much has been said on both sides of this question but do you know that the vote is restricted to just 94 members of Parliament? Each member of Parliament is being asked to cast a conscience vote on behalf of 15,000 to 20,000 constituents. What an unenviable task. If you feel strongly on this matter, there are three things that can be done. 1. Sign the petition against the bill available at the Salvation Army office in Victoria Street, opposite the Town Hall. 2. Write to your member of Parliament and tell him or her how you wish him or her to vote on your behalf. 3. Write to the Prime Minister and give him your views on the subject, and ask for a referendum to be undertaken at the next General Election. These things should be done today. — Yours etc.,
JOHN O. WARD. May 13, 1985.
