Tenders close for trawler
PA Wellington Eight tenders have been received for the confiscated Korean fishing boat Tae Chang 83. Tenders closed at 2 p.m. yesterday. The fate of the trawler may not be known for pome time, as investigations into a writ placed on the vessel by a Nelson company are continuing. The Nelson company, Nalder and Biddle, seeks almost $190,000 and has publicly warned tenderers that $5.19 million was due to two creditors who would seek full restitution from the eventual owners.
million as first mortgagee. The Government Stores Board and the Ministry of
Agriculture and Fisheries would not comment on the closing of tenders yesterday. Mr Bruce Shallard, a senior executive officer in the Ministry said that investigations by the Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs into the claims lodged against the vessels were continuing. The Tae Chang 83 was arrested in early December and has been detained at Lyttelton since December 13.
The master admitted 38 offences of exceeding area quotas, failing to keep records, failing to report catches, and furnishing false information. The vessel is a stern trawler built in November, 1974, in Japan.
