Work on school gym begins

Reinstatement work on Te Kura gymnasium at Christchurch Boys’ High School, which was damaged by fire in December, is expected to start today. Finance for the work was approved by the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, on January 24. A firm of private architects, Hall and Mackenzie, had negotiated an acceptable contract with Fletcher Construction, Ltd, for the work, said the regional executive officer of the

Education Department, Mr Bob Sanders, yesterday. The work would cost just under $200,000, he said. Te Kura gymnasium was built in 1974 and is about 736 sq m in area. Hall and Mackenzie also had authority to prepare a report and cost estimates for the reinstatement or replacement of the Leggat memorial gymnasium he said. The 377 sq m Leggat gymnasium built in 1959, was extensively damaged in the fire.
