Future of thar

Sir,—Zeff Veronese (November 5) obviously has little knowledge of consistent thought. In his previous letter he told us that thar numbers would never increase because commercial interests would control them. I replied that commercial interests would want greater thar numbers than at present. So now Mr Veronese tells us that he will put up with low thar numbers. I am sure, in fact, that he would object to the extremely low numbers truly compatible with vegetation health. Since he has abandoned control by capitalism, however, how does he propose to control these numbers? It is clear that recreational hunting is ineffective. Mr Veronese’s call for studies on thar is a bit late. Thar have already been studied, and in certain circles the results are common knowledge. Mr Veronese talks of our children’s rights. If our children want to shoot thar they can reintroduce them quite easily — if they are stupid enough. — Yours, etc.,

D. J. ROUND. November 5, 1984.
