Animals used in experiments

Sir,—You reported on November 1 that the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, has set up a National Animals Ethics Advisory Committee for the protection of

animals used in, research. While there are representatives of many different occupations on the committee, there are no anti-vivisec-tion representatives, who have been lobbying for years for greater protection for animals. There is little point in having such a committee unless the groups which are completely aware of the extent of animal abuse are included. The inclusion of S.P.C.A. members is not sufficient, because many S.P.C.A. members are unaware of the problem. Unless anti-vivisec-tion organisations are given representation, this committee could be another exercise in futility and mere window dressing. — Yours, etc.,

J. SHARP. November 4, 1984.
