U.S. election

Sir,—ln the foreign affairs debate Walter Mondale casually alluded to President Reagan’s age and asked him whether he thought he could handle another nuclear crisis as the young John Kennedy had during the nerve-wracking and sleepless days and nights of the Cuban crisis. Mr Reagan made a joke of it, as is his habit, but Mr Mondale had a point — no man in his seventies is capable of coping with such a situation. Mr Reagan would be 77 in his final year (even Churchill was only 71 in 1945). Surprisingly, the Democrats have not hammered the point despite the dirt flung at Geraldine Ferraro. Perhaps they do not need to remind the American electorate of it, or are saving up for a last-minute effort.—Yours, etc.,

VERNON WILKINSON. October 29, 1984.
