Gin traps

Sir,—ln reply to Leonne Watson (November 2) I point out that the S.P.C.A. is not allowing the use of gin traps to continue unchallenged. The use of these inhumane traps has been, and still is, of great concern to the S.P.C.A. and other animal welfare organisations. Representatives of our society have constantly made approaches to the Government on this issue, but until a suitable alternative is found can expect no legislation on their use. Snare traps, for instance, have not been proved humane as the animal frequently suffers a slow death from suffocation. One of the main problems with traps is that they are frequently set up by amateur people with no knowledge, and with resultant cruelty to animals. — Yours, etc., J. M. PRATTLEY (Mrs), Vice-chairman, S.P.C.A. (Canterbury). November 3, 1984.
