Rain welcomed at Marlborough A. and P. Show
Rain on show day is generally an unwelcome event; but not in Marlborough this year. Light but steady raid for most of Saturday brought some relief for the farming community even if it did result in a reduced attendance.: Increased admission charges more than compensated for the lower attendance. Gatetakings on Friday were:about $5OO up on last year. -The total for the two days was , $5845, compared with $5700 last year. Notwithstanding the rain, the drought, and somewhat reduced entries, there was no doubt that the 112th annual show of the Marlborough Agricultural and Pastoral Association was a successful event. The president of the) association, Mr G. B. Parker, said that stock judges had commented most favourably on the high quality and presentation of animals. Sheep judges had expressed amazement at the standard of entries from dry areas of the province. Mr Parker farms'“The Castles” property in the. Lower Dashwood and runs a Corriedale flock. This is the first year of his two-year term of office. He said that the drop in fewer entries was only a passing phase in the cycle of show interest. There would always be a place for agricultural and pastoral association shows, even if there was a change in emphasis. Horses had attracted the biggest entries by far. Goats, which had been allocated exhibition space only several years ago, now had a recognised place in competition. Deer, which had exhibition space this year, would eventually have a section in the show. ; Mr Parker said that the association relied on the whole community for a successful show. Attendance at shows was the justification for the association’s existence. “The competitive exhibition of stock plays an important f>art in the development of the ivestock industry,” he said. Mr Parker congratulated the Blenheim Borough Council and its staff on the condition of the showgrounds, and for leading the way in assocation with other user groups in transforming the old grandstand into a real asset for use by the A. and P. Association and sports bodies. Championship awards were as follows:— HORSES Saddle ponies.— T.
