Five pacemen in Aust. team
NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian cricket selectors included five pacemen in the side for the first test against the West Indies, starting in Perth on November 9.
The Australian 12 to play the West Indians is: Kim Hughes (Western Australia, captain), Allan Border (Queensland, vice-captain), Terry Aiderman (Western Australia), John Dyson (New South Wales), Rodney Hogg (Victoria), Geoff Lawson (New South Wales), John Maguire (Queensland), Wayne Phillips (South Australia), Carl Rackemann (Queensland), Kepler Wessels (Queensland), Graeme Wood (Western Australia), Graham Yallop (Victoria). The 12th man will be an-
nounced on the morning ol the match.
The performance of the Australian top order batsmen will be the key to the challenge for the Sir Frank Worrell Cup in a test series tagged “Showdown for the Crown.”
The stiffening of the batting order with the inclusion of three openers — Wessels, Wood and Dyson — is attempted insurance against a breakthrough in the opening overs.
The trio have to get the shine off the ball to enable the middle order of Hughes, Border, Yallop and Phillips to consolidate rather than face an untamed West Indian pace attack.
