Thomson to delay choice
NZPA-AAP Melbourne The New Zealand-born jockey Brent Thomson may delay until as late as Sunday his decision on which horse to ride in Tuesday’s sAusts2s,ooo Melbourne Cup at Flemington. Thomson yesterday said he was no closer to selecting which of the three Colin Hayes-trained Cup contenders he would ride and that tomorrow’s racing at Flemington would not make his decision any easier.
The two horses most prominent in Thomson’s mind are the Herbert Power Handicap winner, Colonial Flag, and the mare Mapperley Heights.
He said yesterday the stable’s third string, British, had not been ruled out as a Cup chance. Hayes confirmed that British would run in the Cup although the imported entire would not run tomorrow.
Thomson will ride Mapperley Heights in tomorrow’s Dalgety (2500 m at Flemington and Colonial Flag in the L. K. S. Mackinnon Stakes (2000 m
“I want to be sure I’ve made the right decision so I won’t make up my mind until at least Saturday night and I may wait until Sunday' morning,” Thomson said.
